“Should You have a Morning “Ghee Shot” For Your Health?
The morning ghee shot is one of the latest “wellness” trends—but it’s a reminder that not all health hacks are harmless.
Nisha, a 34-year-old marketing professional, told her provider she was drinking a spoonful of ghee every morning because “Instagram said it boosts immunity.” She was shocked when her cholesterol panel came back elevated.
The Kernel of Truth:
- Ghee is a traditional clarified butter used in Ayurvedic practices that contains some fats that are needed for good health.
The Rest
- There is no strong evidence that consuming ghee daily on an empty stomach improves digestion, skin, or immunity.¹
- Cultural practices are often popularized without the context that may modify their health effects
- Overconsumption of ghee may raise cholesterol and weight.²
Good health is multifactorial and supported by eating nutrient rich foods, regular physical activity and recommended health screenings. Individuals should consult their team about whether you need supplements and which ones would be right for you.
